Imagine walking from your kitchen to your back porch and the music follows you -- seamlessly, at the right volume, without you touching anything. That is whole-home audio done right. It is one of the most consistently appreciated technology installations we do in Raleigh homes, and one of the most regretted when it is skipped during a build.
How Distributed Audio Works
A distributed audio system consists of three elements: a music source, an amplification and distribution system, and speakers in each zone. The music source can be a streaming service (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal), a local music library, internet radio, or an AV input. The distribution system routes different sources to different rooms simultaneously at independent volumes. The speakers -- typically in-ceiling -- deliver consistent, even coverage throughout each zone.
The key capability is independence: your master bath can be playing jazz while the kitchen plays a podcast and the back porch plays a game on the outdoor TV audio -- all simultaneously, all from the same system, all controlled from a single app or voice command.
CasaTunes: Our Preferred Whole-Home Audio Platform
For whole-home distributed audio, we frequently install CasaTunes -- a whole-home audio server specifically designed for the residential market. CasaTunes streams from Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, local libraries, AirPlay, and internet radio simultaneously to any combination of zones. The app is clean and intuitive enough that every family member uses it without training. Integration with RTI is native and stable.
Sonos is the alternative we recommend for projects where simplicity and self-service expansion are priorities. The Sonos Amp powers in-ceiling speakers and integrates into the Sonos ecosystem for easy room additions over time.
In-Ceiling Speakers: The Invisible Infrastructure
In-ceiling speakers are the defining feature of a professionally installed whole-home audio system. Flush-mounted, painted to match the ceiling, with no visible hardware except the grille. Two speakers per room placed at appropriate angles provide even, enveloping coverage from any seat.
We primarily install Sonance, Polk Audio Reserve, and Klipsch in-ceiling speakers. At the architectural end, Sonance speakers are designed to disappear into the ceiling so completely that guests often cannot identify where the sound is coming from.

Learn About Whole House AudioOutdoor Zones: The Most-Appreciated Addition
Outdoor audio zones are consistently the highest-rated addition clients make to their homes -- and the lowest cost to add during new construction. Prewiring speaker wire to the patio, pool area, and outdoor kitchen during framing costs - per zone. Adding outdoor speakers after drywall is a much larger project. Outdoor speaker brands we install: Polk Audio Atrium, Sonance Outdoor, and Klipsch AW series -- all rated for North Carolina summer heat and winter cold.
